Wintry showers continue to hit Scotland as snow and ice warnings issued

Wintry showers are expected to hit most of Scotland, as the Met Office has issued three warnings for snow and ice.

The Met Office warned there is a chance of travel disruption on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, as well as delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.

The first warning for snow came into place at midnight on Sunday and will expire at 12pm on Monday.

Forecasters warned that outbreaks of snow will turn heavier across central Scotland, Strathclyde, the Scottish Borders, Edinburgh, the Lothians as well as Dumfries and Galloway.

The Met Office said up to 5cm of snow could accumulate widely with higher ground of the Borders and southern edge of the Lothians reaching as much as 20cm.

Rain or sleet is more likely near some eastern coasts.

Forecasters warned that there is a small chance that power cuts and other services, such as mobile coverage, will be disrupted.

The Met Office added there is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off.

A yellow warning for snow and ice was also issued at 9am on Sunday and will remain in place until 6am on Monday.

The warning covers central Scotland, Aberdeenshire, the Highlands, Edinburgh, west Lothian and North Lanarkshire.

The Met Office warned that affected areas could see longer journey times with disruption to roads as well as bus and train services.

It added that some icy patches will form on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, leading to a chance of injury.

A second yellow warning for snow and ice is in place across more northern parts of the country from 12pm today and will expire at 11am on Monday.

The warning covers the Highlands, Dumfries and Galloway, and parts of Strathclyde.

The Met Office said that across northern and northwestern Scotland there will be more showers falling as rain, sleet and soft hail near windward coasts.

Snowfall is forecast on higher ground will some areas reaching up to 4cm.

Southwest Scotland will see more persistent snow during Sunday afternoon, which could reach up to 5cm in some places.

“Across the wider region, icy stretches are likely to form and, combined with lying snow in places, will make for some difficult driving conditions,” the Met Office said.

ScotRail urged people to take while travelling on their surfaces adding that some platforms may become slippy.

Stagecoach was forced to cancel two bus services due to a weather-related vehicle fault.
