Wettest April on record stalled Scottish economic performance

1. Heavy rain dampened Scotland’s economic performance in April, according to official data.

The Scottish government statistics showed 0 per cent growth in gross domestic product (GDP) in the onshore economy when compared with March.

The services sector, which makes up about three quarters of the headline GDP number, is thought to have contracted by 0.1 per cent in April.

The researchers said there had been anecdotal evidence that the wet weather during the month had negatively impacted on areas such as retail.

In contrast the production sector grew by 1.4 per cent month-on-month, helped by a stronger performance from manufacturing.
