United fans rage at sale of Scotland ace Scott McTominay after Liverpool defeat

MANCHESTER UNITED had another afternoon to forget after being thrashed 3-0 at home by rivals Liverpool.

It continues a dream start for new Reds boss Arne Slot as a double from Luiz Diaz and a Mo Salah strike sealed another famous derby win at Old Trafford.

In contrast, there was little positive from United’s point of view as their woes under Erik Ten Hag continue.

Several of their stars got it into the neck for under-par performances, especially Casemiro who was hooked at half-time.

But it was the name of one player who WASN’T involved that many United fans were talking about during and after the game.

Scott McTominay ended a 22-year relationship with the Old Trafford club – seven in the first-team squad – when he left this week for Napoli in a £25m deal.

Ten Hag admitted he wasn’t happy to lose the Scotland international and blamed the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules which makes it more appealing to clubs to move on academy graduates for pure profit.

The Old Trafford club moved quickly to replace McTominay by snapping up PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte in a £42m move.

But angry fans made clear they would rather have had the Scot in the team to face Liverpool – and wished United hadn’t sold him.

One of them was a former Man United youth team-mate Demetri Mitchell – who went on to play for both Hearts and Hibs.

He wrote on X: “McTominay would have been better than Casemiro this season.

“5 years younger and on a third of the wages but United sell him.”

Another angry Red Devil said: “This is the game where McTominay should be starting, he understands what a big game this is.”

And a third United fan noted: “Casemiro was finished last season and United offloaded McTominay cos nobody wanted Casemiro. They will eventually sack ETH even after giving him a new contract.”

While another disappointed supporter simply added: “Selling McTominay was a bad idea.”

Another said: “Letting go of Scott McTominay shows that the club is not going anywhere.

“The transfers have been baffling and that’s been the pattern in the Ten Hag tenure without any real improvement in results.”
