‘Unit’ John Souttar’s Scotland impact praised by Craig Levein
Former Scotland manager Craig Levein says Rangers defender John Souttar’s “excellent” form has helped to fuel Scotland’s revival.
After being omitted from Steve Clarke’s squad for Euro 2024, Souttar didn’t feature in the opening Nations League games as Scotland suffered three straight defeats.
Btu the 28-year-old started the final three matches as Clarke’s side took seven points from nine – including wins over Croatia and Poland – to salvage a relegation play-off, with the draw taking place on Friday.
“Souttar has been doing really well, his performances have been have been excellent,” said Levein, who managed the centre-back at Hearts.
He added: “John is maturing into a player who’s always had great elegance, but his decision-making and his use of the ball are now better.
“He’s got good speed. Physically, he’s a unit now.
“He’s good in the air. I’m thrilled for him. He’s had three really bad Achilles injuries in the past, and coming back from that, all credit to him to get to the level he’s now at.”
