Tierney to miss rest of Euro 2024 due to injury

Scotland’s Kieran Tierney has been ruled out for the rest of the European Championship due to injury.

Head coach Steve Clarke confirmed earlier this week that the 27-year-old left-back would miss Scotland’s decisive final Euro 2024 group match against Hungary after appearing to pick up a hamstring issue against Switzerland.

The defender, who said he was “heartbroken” at the news on social media, has left Scotland’s training base in Germany to return to his club, Arsenal, where he will undergo further assessment and begin his rehabilitation.

Tierney’s contract with Arsenal is set to expire in 2026 and The Athletic reported in June that the north London club are considering strengthening their left-back options this summer. Given the number of options already within the squad, however, that would most likely require some sales to go through first.

He spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Real Sociedad from Arsenal, and missed more than three months in total with four different leg muscular injuries including calf, groin and hamstring layoffs.

Speaking to The Athletic, Tierney said on his recurring injury issues: “I shut off for a few days from people. They’ll not get a hold of me for three or four days until I accept the injury. That’s the hardest thing about it: accepting it.

“One minute, you’re looking forward to the last games and the Euros, then you’re thinking about all the big games you’ve missed. It takes me time by myself to be quiet, reflect and motivate myself to go again. Once I’ve accepted it, I’m positive again but people know not to text me about it.

“You get s**t moments in football and life, like everyone does. It’s just how you deal with it and bounce back.”

Scotland are third in Group A with one point from their first two matches. Hungary are at the bottom with zero points, while Switzerland is second with four points. Germany  secured their progress to the knockout stages by winning both of their opening games, earning six points.
