Three new faces in as McGinn ruled out of Nations League Scotland squad

Three new faces have been called up to the Scotland squad for the first time as John McGinn is ruled out of the Nations League double-header against Croatia and Portugal.

In an update from the Scottish Football Association on Tuesday, it was revealed that West Ham midfielder Andy Irving, Aberdeen defender Nicky Devlin, and Preston North End defender Liam Lindsay have all been called up.

Liam Lindsay plays at English Championship side Preston North End, seven years after he left Partick Thistle, while Andy Irving has recently made an impact in the English Premier League with West Ham United and Nicky Devlin has enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season with Aberdeen.

It comes after influential vice-captain McGinn was ruled out of the team with a hamstring injury, which has also ruled the midfielder out of Aston Villa’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich this week.

Kieran Tierney, Aaron Hickey, Nathan Patterson and Scott McKenna all remain on the sidelines with injury.

Striker Che Adams, who missed the matches against Poland and Portugal in September through injury, has returned, and he is joined by Celtic duo Greg Taylor and James Forrest, who also last missed out through injury.

Uncapped Dundee goalkeeper Jon McCracken has retained his place after receiving his first call-up last month while veteran Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon is back in for the first time since missing out on Euro 2024 selection.

Ryan Gauld and Ben Doak have retained their places but Tommy Conway, Connor Barron, Max Johnston and Josh Doig – all of whom are still eligible for under-21 selection – have not been included after being involved last month.

Lawrence Shankland has kept his place in attack despite a difficult start to the season at club level.

In a shuffling around of the coaching set-up, assistant coach Austin MacPhee has left from his role as set-piece specialist due to family circumstances.
