The final major of the year has begun with the running of the 152nd Open Championship and English major debutant Daniel Brown was the shock overnight leader after round one, with Shane Lowry just one back in pursuit of a second Open title.

Brown was one of the last players to finish late on Thursday evening, adding a birdie on the 18th to cap a magnificent round of 65 and pip Lowry in the clubhouse.

American Justin Thomas set the early benchmark with a three-under par round of 68 battling wet and windy conditions on the Scottish coast. But Rory McIlroy had a nightmare day shooting 78, seven over par, and will need a miracle round this afternoon to make it into the weekend. Tiger Woods cut a frustrated figure, too, as he laboured to an eight-over-par 79.

Jordan Spieth remains on level par after the ninth.

-7 Lowry; -5 Brown; -3 Thomas, Noren; -2 Horschel, Cantlay, Schauffele, Hughes and more

Horschel misses the birdie attempt so he finishes the day with a round of 68, and is among the group on -2 along with Schauffele, who just made par on the 11th.

They’ve been joined by Cantlay, who just birdied the same hole.

The Open 2024: Latest scores

-7 Lowry; -5 Brown; -3 Thomas, Noren; -2 Horschel, Burmester, Schauffele, Hughes and more

Lowry’s tee shot on the 10th carries for over 310 yards, and he clips it away from the crowd on the second.

Noren has moved up to -3 after securing that birdie on the second. Brown tees off on the par-three fifth and avoids the greenside bunkers, so looks set for par at least.

Horschel’s approach on the 18th is okay, but he’ll make par at best. Burmester drops a shot on the 14th to move down to -1.

Morikawa misses the putt for par and moves to +4 – as it stands he’s not making the cut, but a lot will likely change.

-7 Lowry; -5 Brown; -3 Thomas; -2 Horschel, Burmester, Schauffele, Hughes and more

Cantlay misses the birdie shot in the end, as does Horschel, and they stay on one and two under respectively.

Lowry has a 35-foot putt for birdie on the ninth, so it’s asking a lot – and he goes just wide. He’ll finish the front nine on two underfoot the day.

Schauffele tees off on the problematic par-four 11th and it’s a great effort from blind, landing on the fairway.

Koepka goes for the birdie on the 11th but he skims it, and he’s staying on +1.

Woods makes par on 10, but he’ll have very little chance of making the cut of course.

Alex Noren has started for the day too, making par on the first hole before setting up a great chance for an early birdie on the second.

Brown makes the up and down for the bogey, and he goes to -5.

-7 Lowry; -6 Brown; -3 Thomas; -2 Horschel, Burmester, Schauffele, Hughes and more

Frozen rope for Shane Lowry as he tees off on the ninth. He just about rolls onto the green with the approach shot to set up a birdie chance.

Cantlay will get the chance to move to two under after a good approach shot, while Spieth might move to -1 after doing the same on the seventh.

Brown’s ball is lying deep in the rough but he hooks it out and could save par on the fourth – but he won’t now as the third shot finds the first cut.

Schauffele goes for the birdie at 10 but it’s wide.

Lowry has the 11-foot putt attempt for the lead – and he drains it! He’s two under for the day and he’s at -7.

Brooks Koepka will stay on one over as his birdie shot goes wide.

Spieth’s approach on the seventh is judged well, landing within birdie distance, and he sinks it to move to even par. On the same hole, Scheffler’s birdie putt falls short and he’ll stay on -1.

Woods misses the putt for par on the ninth and he enters the back nine on +11.

Horschel is the latest to join the group on -2 as he birdies the 16th.

Conners, Day, Cantlay and Scheffler are all one shot behind that group on -1.

Brown has a chance to save for par but it’s from fairly deep, but he makes it to stay in the joint lead.

Cantlay’s approach on the ninth lands short of the green, and he might have to scramble as he looks to continue climbing up the leaderboard.

Lowry tees off on the par-three eighth and it’s a good one – it’ll be par at the very least. Matt Fitzpatrick, who’s fallen to +3, finds the greenside bunker with his attempt.

Jason Day has birdied the 13th so he moves to -1. Jordan is trying to get back to -2, but he edges a shot past the pin and onto the first cut. He’ll have to settle for a bogey and level par.

Scheffler is still looking to join the chasing pack on -2, and his tee shot on the seventh will give him a chance.

Shane Lowry misses a chance to regain the outright lead as his putt skims the hole, but he’ll make par.

Lowry’s tee shot on the seventh is a good one, carrying for over 250 yards.

Schauffele has a birdie attempt on the eighth and he drains it for back-to-back birdies and a score of -2.

Scheffler has work to do to save par as he finds the greenside bunker with his approach on the sixth…but he’ll do it! He hooks a great chip out of the bunker, and he’ll get up and down to save par.

Cantlay has a birdie attempt on the ninth to move to -1 – it’s not an easy putt but he makes it for his third birdie of the day!

Spieth is off to a good start on the sixth as he finds the green easily with his tee shot and sets up the birdie opportunity.

The Open 2024: Latest scores

Schauffele makes his first birdie of the day and he’s back to -1, and his tee shot on the next hole is solid.

Brown makes the green in two on the second, but a birdie will be difficult from there – he misjudges the line and taps in for par.

Koepka finds the green with his approach on the ninth, and he’ll make par at best.

Lowry’s birdie putt on the sixth falls short, and he stays on -6.
