Tartan Army to come face to face with violent ultras in ‘high-risk’ Euros clash
THE Tartan Army will come face-to-face with violent ultras in a match declared “high-risk” by Euro 2024 cops.
Up to 2,500 extra officers will take to the streets amid fears that Hungary’s hardcore yobs will try to provoke Scotland’s party-loving fans when they meet in Stuttgart on June 23.
Carsten Hofler, the local police force’s head of operations, warned troublemakers: “If they want to fight, we will intervene in a robust manner.
“The Scots are considered peaceful but also thirsty. And alcohol can be a catalyst for violence in certain situations.
“We are concerned about the serious hooligan scene in Hungary.”
The notorious thugs, known as the Carpathian Brigade, racially abused and pelted England stars with missiles in Budapest during a September 2021 World Cup qualifier.
And weeks later they clashed with English cops during the return match at Wembley.
The crew previously marched with a banner opposing footballers’ right to take the knee — seen as an anti-racism gesture.
Their match against hosts Germany on June 19 is also deemed “high-risk” by chiefs.
But the 200,000 Scots fans expected to head to the tournament were last night backed to keep the peace.
Iain Emerson, editor of The Famous Tartan Army magazine, said: “We can’t legislate for what Hungary supporters might do but there will be no bother created by the Tartan Army.
“I have never seen us start trouble with opposition fans.
“We are always on our best behaviour, regardless of how much beer is drunk.”
