Supercomputer rates Scotland’s chances of qualifying from group after Swiss draw

SCOTLAND have given themselves a chance to make history with last night’s 1-1 draw with Switzerland.

They now need to win against Hungary in their final matchday – and HOPE the rest of the results in other groups go their way.

Since the tournament went to 24 teams, no team has EVER failed to qualify with four points.

But the Scots have a poor goal difference – and that would be a new agony for the football gods to inflict upon us.

And now the boffins at BETSiE have run an algorithm to predict the chances of us – and everyone else – making it out of the group stages.

And they don’t make great reading for Steve Clarke and his men with the Scots still only given a 36% chance of making it out of the group stages.

That’s less than every one of the teams the supercomputer expects to finish third in every other group – EXCEPT Croatia.

The Croats and Albanians both have a point to their name in Group B, although Croatia have a minus 3 goal difference and have still to face Italy.

The Scots have played a game more than many of their rivals, of course, so there’s plenty of room for change.

But with current third placed sides Serbia (Group C, 61%), Austria (Group D, 50%), Belgium (Group E, 74%), and Czechia (Group F, 73%) all given a far higher chance of making it than Scotland, perhaps Steve Clarke and the Tartan Army shouldn’t start counting their chickens just yet.

Scotland still have a slim mathematical chance of finishing second in the group but only the top four third placed teams sure of reaching the knockout phase.

Germany have already qualified for the knockout stages, with Switzerland a near mathematical certainty to do likewise at 99.99%.

The Scots have been dealt a seismic injury blow at Euro 2024 after Kieran Tierney was stretchered-off.

He was chasing down Dan Ndoye as the forward bore down on goal, when he appeared to damage a hamstring and go down in a heap.

Tierney looked visibly distraught as a stretcher was instantly called for and the former Celtic man was taken off to be replaced by Scott McKenna.

The injury nightmare struck mid way through the second-half of the Group A showdown in Cologne.
