French fashion house Dior has returned to Scotland for its first catwalk show in the country in almost seven decades.

Dior took inspiration from Scottish history for the show in the gardens of Drummond Castle near Crieff in Perthshire, as celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence, Rosamund Pike and Anya Taylor-Joy watched on.

The last time the label brought a runway show to Scotland was in 1955, when founder Christian Dior held two fashion shows – one at the Gleneagles hotel in Auchterarder, and the other at Glasgow’s Central Hotel.

The Cruise 2025 event on Monday evening was held in the “Versailles of Scotland”, which was used as the set for the French palace gardens in the TV series Outlander.

Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri was inspired by the location, and with a nod to the Auld Alliance between the Scots and the French, opened the show with tartan outfits and ended with a parade of pipers.

She had worked with Scottish fabric makers including Harris Tweed and Johnstons of Elgin, and enlisted the help of Samantha McCoach from Le Kilt to develop her designer pocketed kilts.

Some of the outfits were embroidered with words like “fierce”, “nag”, “emotional”, “difficult” and “bossy” that are often used to insult women. Before the show, Dior’s Instagram listed as inspiration late-medieval tapestries known as La Dame a la Licorne and needlework by Mary, Queen of Scots, who was half-French.
