South Lanarkshire club secures grant for ‘pivotal’ golf redevelopment

It is the largest-ever grant awarded by the renewable energy firm, which operates the Middle Muir and Kype Muir wind farms in South Lanarkshire.  Aileen McCreadie, partnerships and community manager at OnPath Energy, said the redevelopment is an ideal combination of sustainability and community benefit.

“Leadhills Golf Club is a key part of life in this area, and we’re excited to help make their new clubhouse a beacon of green energy solutions,” she added. “This project is a perfect example of how renewable energy can support local communities while promoting sustainable tourism and economic development.”

The club is part of a broader community action plan and operates in collaboration with local businesses, such as the village hotel and Airbnb providers, who purchase memberships for their guests. The clubhouse redevelopment is expected to support other local businesses by strengthening the area’s appeal as a daytrip destination.

“This is an incredible step forward for us,” said Amanda Davis, the club’s development officer. “The grant from OnPath Energy means we can move ahead with our plans to rebuild a new, sustainable clubhouse that not only meets the needs of our members but also serves the broader community.”

She added: “The new clubhouse will not only benefit golfers but will also provide a reason for more visitors to come and enjoy the beauty of Leadhills and its surrounding areas.”

The grant from OnPath Energy comes as part of the company’s REF grant which is managed and distributed by South Lanarkshire Council utilising funding generated from OnPath Energy’s nearby Middle Muir Wind Farm. The council recently changed its REF guidelines to include higher funding percentages, support for longer-term projects, and a new fund to help rural communities maintain local facilities.

Councillor Robert Brown said: “The REF fund is about more than just providing financial support – it’s about creating long-term benefits for communities.

“By helping Leadhills Golf Club modernise its facilities and adopt sustainable practices, the fund is not only helping to preserve an important part of local heritage but also contributing to the economic vitality of the area.”
