Shinty: Kingussie lift Camanachd Cup to move closer to Grand Slam

Kingussie won the Camanachd Cup with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Lovat to move to the brink of a Grand Slam.

The Badenoch side – who were favourites to claim the silverware in shinty’s top competition – went behind twice before claiming their 26th Camanachd title in a final that saw both teams finish with 11 men.

Danny Kelly put Lovat ahead in the opening minutes at An Aird in Fort William, but just a minute later Kingussie levelled through Dylan Borthwick, who was playing in his first Camanachd final.

The team from Kiltarlity went ahead for a second time in the first half following an outstanding strike from Fraser Heath.

It was all square at half-time, though, after Cameron Bremner netted for Kings, who scored what proved to be the winner through Borthwick early in the second half.

There could have been a hat-trick for Borthwick, but he had a penalty saved by Lovat goalkeeper Stuart MacDonald.

Kingussie’s Bremner received a red card for hitting out with his stick, while fellow scorer Heath, of Lovat, was sent off for hitting a player on the ground.

Kingussie, having also claimed the MacTavish Cup and Macaulay Cup, now need only one more league win to secure the Premiership title and the Grand Slam.
