Scots to be hit with 10 DAYS’ worth of rain today as Met Office issue warning
SCOTS have been warned that they are set to be battered with TEN DAYS’ worth of rain today as torrential downpours lash the country.
Flood warnings have been issued across the southwest as 16 hours of persistent rain is set to fall over the course of the day.

A yellow weather alert for rain came into force at 3am this morning and is set to last until 7pm tonight.
Between 40mm and 60mm of rainfall is expected, along with gusts of up to 50mph in some areas.
Areas covered by the weather warning include Dumfries and Galloway, Strathclyde areas, the Borders and South Lanarkshire.
The Met Office also warned that flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible.
These areas have already seen a large amount of rainfall over the last week.
And as a result, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency has issued three flood warnings.

Spray and flooding on roads could make journey times longer, with motorists urged to drive carefully on the roads.
Bus and train services will also be affected, and passengers are encouraged to check their journeys before leaving their homes.

STV weatherman Philip Petrie said the amount of rain expected to fall today is the equivalent of around ten days’ worth.
He said: “Overnight, a deep area of low pressure moved in from the west.
“Things have turned increasingly cloudy from the south and west, with outbreaks of rain persistent and heavy at times.
“The winds have picked up strength too – with gusts of 50mph around the Western Isles.”
Forecasters added: “Persistent rain will affect southwest Scotland on Tuesday, rain heavy at times before beginning to ease later.
“Accumulations of 25 to 40 mm rain are likely quite widely whilst in excess of 60 mm could fall on some exposed hills.”
The Met Office also issued advice to homeowners on how to stay safe during powercuts and flooding.
They said: “Check if your property could be at risk of flooding.
BETTER WEATHER TO COME
THERE is a major weather shift on the way for Scots, with warmer temperatures and bright skies on the horizon.
From Wednesday, there will be some sunshine around for some parts of the country.
In Edinburgh, there will be highs of 20C on Wednesday as sunny intervals change to light showers by lunchtime, while Thursday and Friday look brighter with sunny spells and scattered showers.
In Glasgow, there will still be some rain around on Wednesday but the mercury will rise to 19C with some sunny spells.
The east coast will have the best of the weather towards the end of the week with Aberdeen seeing a mix of sunny or clear spells and a few showers.
Temperatures will hit highs of around 18C.
The Met Office long-range weather forecast from Friday, August 30 to Sunday, September 8 read: “High pressure will tend to be located either over or close to the UK through much of this period, leading to a more widely settled period of weather.
“That said, weak frontal systems could still provide some cloud and patchy outbreaks of rain at times, this most likely in more western and northwestern areas, although any amounts of rain away from the far northwest will be typically fairly small.
“The best of the drier and brighter conditions, at least initially, will be in more southern and eastern parts.
“There may eventually be a trend towards very warm conditions, especially in southern areas, with perhaps an increasing chance of a few showers or thunderstorms as a result.”
“If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.
“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.
“People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance.

“It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.
“Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”
