Scotland’s rich list revealed as clothing mogul and whisky tycoon grab top spots

SCOTLAND’S wealthiest billionaires have been revealed in the Sunday Times Rich List 2024.

The list is made up of the 350 richest people in the UK and includes major figures within business, fashion and retail.

The combined wealth of the 350 individuals and families reached £795.3bn, which is larger than the annual GDP of Poland.

The minimum entry for the list is £350m.

Scotland‘s biggest landowner, Anders Holch Povlsen has again grabbed the top spot for the third year running, according to the Sunday Times.

The founder of Glasgow-based laser eye surgery business Optical Express, David moulsdale also made his debut on this year’s rich list at £374million.

But the top spots were nabbed a media tycoon, whisky giant and a North Sea powerhouse.

Sir Cameron Mackintosh’s personal fortune grew to £1.25bn. The musical theatre producer owns the 15,000 acre Nevis Estate on North Morar, east of Mallaig.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, owner of Scottish petrochemical company, INEOS was the fourth richest person in the UK with a fortune of £23 bn.

Harrods owner Mohammad Al Fayed who regularly visits his 65,000 acre Balnagown estate in the Scottish Highlands, fortune dropped to £1.5 billion.

However, Scotland’s first billionaire Sir Tom Hunter’s wealth remained at £700million.

Anders Povlsen

The Danish billionaire’s personal fortune of £6.73 billion, which dropped from by 1.77 billion since last year.

The Owner of international retail clothing chain Bestseller is also the largest stakeholder in Asos.

He also owns more than 220,000 acres of the Scottish Highlands across 13 estates , which he runs under his firm, Wildland.

Glenn Gordon and family

The Gordon family behind spirits company William Grant and Sons amassed a personal fortune of £5.619 billion this year.

It increased by more than £1 billion from last year.

Sir Ian Wood and family

The Wood family’s fortune grew by £91 million last year, bringing their total to £1.911 billion.

Sir Ian Wood transformed his family-owned fishing business into a North Sea powerhouse working in the Oil and gas services.

Mahdi Al-Tajir

Owner of Highland Spring, Mahdi Al-Tajir is worth more than £1.6 billion. The former UAE ambassador to England and France‘s wealth grew by £4million.

He splits his time between his home in London and his 18,000 acres Perthshire estate.

Clark family

Lady Philomena Clark and family, owner of motor industry giant Arnold Clark’s networth is estimated to be around £1.581 billion.

It was a decrease of £310 million from last year.

James and Sandy Easdale

The billionaire brothers behind Scottish bus giant McGill’s personal fortune grew by £1.45 billion. It increased by £25 million from last year.

The Thomson family

The family behind media giant DC Thomson‘s personal fortune dropped by £90 million to £1.367 billion since 2023.

JK Rowling

The Harry Potter author’s wealth grew in the past year by £70million with her net worth estimated at £945million.

Sir Brian Souter and Dame Ann Gloag

The founders of transport giants Stagecoach Group, share a fortune of £815 million – up £35 million from last year

Lord Laidlaw

Lord Laidlaw is the tenth richest person according to the Sunday Times with a personal fortune of £741 million.

He founded the Institute for International Research(IIR), a conference and training company, as well as building a property company, investing in sustainable energy.
