Scotland’s promotion has brought nothing but trouble
So the schadenfreude from overtaking England was short-lived. Scotland supporters never get to look down their nose at the neighbours but there was fun to be had when promotion was secured to the top tier of the Nations League two years ago, just as England were being relegated from it. Going up while they went down gave the Tartan Army some rare ammunition and they unloaded it gleefully. But promotion is a rose with thorns. Every promoted team wonders if it might become a Gretna or a Derby County, whose ascent, both in 2007, brought them the embarrassment and pain of being exposed as out of their depth. That season they posted the record low points totals in the Scottish and English top tiers.
