Scotland’s Euro 2024 rivals hammered by UEFA for racist behaviour of fans

UEFA have hammered the Hungarian FA for their fans’ racist behaviour in the final group game against Scotland at Euro 2024.

Steve Clarke‘s side were eliminated in Stuttgart as Hungary grabbed an injury time winner, although it wasn’t enough for the Magyars to qualify for the group stages either.

However, UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings against their national association after racist shouts and chants were flagged in their matches against Scotland and against hosts Germany.

And European football‘s governing body‘s disciplinary committee found their fans guilty of ‘racist/discriminatory behaviour.’

UEFA stated: “The Hungarian Football Federation has been fined 30,000 Euros [£25,322] and banned from selling tickets to its away supporters for their next UEFA competition match for the racist and discriminatory behaviour of its supporters.

“The ban is suspended during a probationary period of two years.”

Scotland would have needed to beat the Hungarians to progress past the group stage for the first time in the nation’s history, but fell to defeat thanks to Kevin Csoboth’s last-minute winner.

Steve Clarke‘s men had given themselves slight hope of qualification with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their second group game, after the write-off of the opening game, a 5-1 battering by hosts Germany.

Hungary have been sanctioned in the past due to racist behaviour from their fans, with England players suffering abuse from the stands during a World Cup qualifier in 2021, and stadium bans enforced after similar issues during Euro 2020.

Meanwhile, Steve Clarke has been spotted for the first time since Scotland’s Euros heartbreak.

The former Kilmarnock boss was seen in the stands during his old club’s Europa League qualifier against Cercle Brugge last night.

He watched Euro 2024 squad member Robby McCrorie and previous Scotland cap Stuart Findlay, as well as squad hopefuls David Watson and Daniel Armstrong.

It was Watson who caused Rugby Park to erupt in the second half, netting a 70th minute equaliser to take the sides to Belgium for the second leg next week with the tie in the balance at 1-1.
