Scotland’s Charlie Cassell breaks record for most wickets on ODI debut – WATCH
Scotland pacer Charlie Cassell has broken the record of most wickets taken on ODI debut with figures of 7/21 in 5.4 overs against Oman on Monday (Jul 22) in ICC Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup League 2.
Casell has taken over the record from South African Kagiso Rabada who had taken 6/16 on his ODI debut against Bangladesh in 2016. Apart from Rabada, West Indies pacer Fidel Edwards also had taken 6/22 on his ODI debut.
Have a look at the video of Cassell’s record-setting seventh wicket below:
Cassell was originally not even named in the original squad of Scotland and was named as a replacement for Chris Sole on July 15.
Scotland captain Richie Berrington was full of praise for Cassell while presenting him with his cap ahead of the match.
“You’ve come back from a huge setback, with that massive injury you had, put you out for a year and a bit. “Just to see your resilience coming back, getting back on the park, and just love watching what you do at Forfs [Forfashire], and just the way how you hold yourself is incredible,” he said.
Thanks to Cassell, Oman were bowled out for a paltry 91 runs before Scotland chased the target in 17.2 overs for the loss of two wickets.
The pacer came on to bowl in the 12th over of the match and took wickets off the first two deliveries he bowled. He, however, missed the hattrick but took a wicket on the fourth ball of the over.
He completed his first over in ODIs as maiden with three wickets dismissing Zeeshan Maqsood, Ayaan Khan and Khalid Kail.
In his second over, he took one more wicket in Shoaib Khan as his figures read 1.3-1-0-4. For his fifth wicket, Cassell dismissed Mehran Khan and sent back PS Athavale for the record-equalling sixth wicket. He dismissed Bilal Khan for his final wicket.
