Scotland’s Charlie Cassell breaks Kagiso Rabada’s record for best figures on ODI debut
Scotland’s pacer, Charlie Cassell broke the long-held record of South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada for the best figures on ODI debut. Cassell picked up seven wickets in just 5.4 overs, conceding 21 runs against Oman in an ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match in Dundee on July 22. He surpassed Rabada’s six for 16 against Bangladesh on his debut in July 2015.
Cassell found a place in the Scotland squad as he replaced Chris Sole who remained unavailable for personal reasons. By the end of nine deliveries in his spell, the pacer had picked Zeeshan Maqsood and Ayaan Khan in the first two balls he bowled. Though the hat-trick ball did not yield any result, the fourth delivery saw Khalid Kail walking back to the pavilion. Shoaib Khan was dismissed in the second over and Cassell had four scalps in nine balls, conceding no run.

“You’ve come back from a huge setback, with that massive injury you had, put you out for a year and a bit. Just to see your resilience coming back, getting back on the park, and just love watching what you do at Forfs [Forfashire], and just the way how you hold yourself is incredible,” Scotland captain Richie Berrington said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Australia will play three T20Is against Scotland
Scotland have an important series as Australia will tour them for three T20Is commencing on September 4. The tour is also comprised of Aussies’ United Kingdom stay as they take on England in three T20Is and five ODIs with the first T20I commencing on September 11. While Australia have sent their formidable players for the tour, it would be interesting to see if Cassell makes it to the Scotland squad as the same is awaited ahead of the impending series.
