Scotland win World Schools Debating Championship

They are the champions of the world.

But only because they successfully argued against the very idea of glorifying winners.

Scotland’s schools debating team beat more than 70 national squads from across the globe and they did so in a way that, according one of their coaches, got “meta”.

“The final proposition was, ‘This house regrets the glorification of champions’, which is quite an ironic topic for the final but it was it was a great debate,” said Jordan Pfotenhauer. “We won when arguing the proposition. One of our last speakers ended by saying he ‘Would be very glad to lift the trophy if we win but the glorification of champions is a very bad thing’.

“It was all quite meta.”
