Scotland vs Hungary live updates
Egg on my face. Hungary were my dark-horse prediction for this tournament. I had my reasons.
Watching them in qualifying and the 2022 Nations League, they were defensively strong, had a mixed defending (high pressing and 5-4-1 mid-block) and attacking (build-up rotations and direct play) style and enough individual quality.
The truth is, they have not shown that defensive solidity in their opening two group matches. Switzerland picked apart their mid-block on Saturday with Michel Aebischer, playing a hybrid No 8 and left wing-back role, either positioned wide to stretch them or rolling into midfield to overload them.
He provided a through ball for Switzerland’s opener, then scored the second of their 3-1 win from range.
Hungary made changes to their wide centre-backs for the Germany game and were largely successful in stopping passes through midfield, into the No 10s. But, like Scotland, they struggled to adapt to going 1-0 behind and were carved through for the opener.
No 9 Barnabas Varga missed headers at 2-0 down (he did score with a header to make it 2-1 against Switzerland) in both games which would have pulled them back into it. Miss five of your six big chances and tournament matches get away from you. Today’s group finale against Scotland is a must-win now.
