Scotland hero John McGinn shuts down bizarre question from Polish reporter
SCOTLAND made sure recent struggles were nothing but a distant memory with a superb victory in Poland.
But despite the euphoria of the last-gasp winner, John McGinn wasn’t about to let one reporter away with a rather over-exuberant assessment of the game.
Scotland ended a dire run of form by beating Croatia 1-0 at Hampden on Friday night.
It was a first competitive win since September 2023.
That triumph meant the Scots headed to Poland still bottom of their Nations League group – but with a chance of finishing second.
What was certain was that a victory over the Poles would see Scotland avoid finishing bottom, and living to fight another day in the Nations League’s top tier.
John McGinn fired Steve Clarke‘s men into a dream early lead in Warsaw, before a stunning Kamil Piatkowski strike made it 1-1 early in the second-half.
But just when it looked like Scotland would have to settle for a point and relegation to League B, up popped Andy Robertson with his first goal for his country in FIVE YEARS to win it in the 93rd minute.
It was a remarkable conclusion to the game and one that moved Scotland onto seven points, ABOVE Poland and into third.
Unfortunately, second spot proved out of reach, with Croatia holding group winners Portugal to a 1-1 draw – that point was enough for them to seal second without having to worry what was going on in Poland.
Finishing third means Scotland can now NOT be in Pot One for the upcoming World Cup qualifying draw and instead look bound for Pot Three.
In terms of the Nations League, Scotland avoided automatic relegation to League B by leapfrogging Poland.
It means, we now face a play-off with one of the League B runners-up with a place in League A on the line.
All things considered, it was a superb night for Scotland in Poland.
After that horror run of just one win in 16 matches, it’s now back-to-back victories over two of Europe’s top sides.
John McGinn has been at the heart of this upturn in fortunes, scoring the winner from the bench against Croatia on Friday and opening the scoring in Poland.
The Aston Villa captain faced the media after the game in Warsaw – and he wasn’t about to let one reporter away with a rather over the top analysis of the match!
A clip posted by BBC Sport Scotland shows McGinn fielding a question from a Polish reporter.
And it captures the moment the 30-year old seems a little baffled about the way the question goes!
In a rather bold claim, the reporter says to McGinn: “One of the greatest days in the history of Scottish football, because it was very Braveheart, especially at the end.”
McGinn, with a wry smile on his face, can be seen blinking at the mention of ‘Braveheart.’
The Hampden hero then tells the reporter: “Aw, you’re taking that a bit too far. It was a good win.”
