Scotland goalkeeper almost left Hearts for Premiership rivals
McGowan, who represented Hearts for two and a half years during the earlier stages of his career, has disclosed that there were strong suggestions that Gordon was interested in a transfer to St Johnstone last summer.
This move would have allowed him to reunite with then manager Craig Levein and secure more regular playing time.
Although Gordon missed out on the Scotland national team squad for Euro 2024, the 42-year-old has made a significant comeback, reestablishing himself as an integral part of Steve Clarke‘s setup.
He’s made 28 appearances for Hearts during the 2024-25 campaign since dislodging Clark and opting to remain in Gorgie.

“I heard in the summer that he was a little bit keen on going to St Johnstone,” McGowan, who represented both clubs, told BBC Sportsound.
“Obviously because Zander Clark was number one and Craig wanted to play.
“And having obviously worked with Craig Levein before, I was hearing strong whispers that was a viable option for St Johnstone.
“I don’t know how far down the road it went but I know that Craig was open to joining St Johnstone if that was to arise.”
