Scotland football fans ‘drink Munich dry’
Scottish fans complained about having to queue for three hours at a fan zone, as Munich’s pubs also ran out of beer during the Euro Championships last weekend.
With Scotland fans taking over Munich’s main plaza and many of the fan zone areas, some pubs said that they had run out of beer. The Sun reported that Woerners’ bar in the city’s Marienplatz had run out of beer only hours after fans from Scotland had arrived ahead of the game on Friday evening.
A waitress for the pub said “your fans like beer so much” and it wasn’t the bar’s fault that it had run out of beer. According to one fan, Brian Robertson, he told the paper that the “place was dry by 4pm” on Friday.
Vodka
Some fans said that they switched to vodka with the beer running out.
As a result of the pressure on the taps, Munich’s bars have now ordered more beer ahead of future clashes and to ensure fans are able to get steins.
Valetina Shaap, reservations manager at the Hofbrauhaus said it had ordered “extra beer” to ensure it doesn’t run out.
In addition, according to the BBC, fans who watched the match at the Olympiapark fan zone said that they had to queue for three hours to get beer and food.
One fan said: “You can’t get a beer in Munich whatsoever.”
Around 25,000 fans packed into the park to watch the match, which Scotland lost 5-1 to Germany, with many stating that the facilities were insufficient for the number of people present, including the toilets.
Booze ban
The news follows England fans not being so lucky. They had to make do with low-alcohol beers at their first game of the Euro 2024 Championships as stronger lager was banned.
Concern from local law enforcement that the usual 4.8% ABV beer could cause issues during the game, the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen decided to only serve lower ABV products, which will be either a Bitburger radler – which is half beer and half citrus soda – or a light version of Bitburger.
The former is a 2.5% ABV variant, and the latter is a slightly higher 2.8%. In addition to only being able to get the lower alcohol products, fans can buy just two pints per purchase at the bar.
But England fans had more to cheer, as they saw their team beat Serbia 1-0.
