Scotland fan dreams up brutal scenario as Tartan Army reveal England feelings

It is a topic which has split football fans across the United Kingdom for years.

Do you want rival home nations to do well in major tournaments or do you actively route against them?

With England and Scotland both qualifying for Euro 2024, the debate continues to rage on, at home and on the ground here in Munich.

Ex-England striker Gabby Agbonlahor made his feelings clear by donning a Germany scarf on the talkSPORT Breakfast Show in front of Scotland legend Alan Brazil.

But how do the Scots feel about England? With more than 200,000 of them here in Munich, about four per cent of the population, there was no better place to find out.

Weaving through Munich’s famous Marienplatz, chants of ‘Super John McGinn’ and ‘No Scotland, no party’ echo through the town square.

We asked a number of them whether they will be wishing England well at the tournament – and most responded immediately with something along the lines of: “Absolutely not.”

One said: “I hope they go out in the group stage.”

Another joked: “I’d rather they weren’t in the tournament.”

The closest it came to any England support was this man, who remarked: “I’ve got to be honest and say probably not.”

He left room for manoeuvre.

However, this particular Scotland fan has an ulterior motive to get behind England in the early stages of the tournament, dreaming up a brutal scenario for the Three Lions.

“I don’t want them out as soon as possible,” he said. “I’d love them to get to the final and concede a goal in extra-time that was a bit contentious.

“It gets ruled out. Then they go to VAR and they actually give the goal when it shouldn’t have been given. That’s the ideal scenario.”

Of course, there are English and Scottish fans out there who wish each other well.

But there is nobody quite like Bob, the Scottish England fan, who called talkSPORT before the two nations met at Euro 2020.

Speaking through a thick Scottish accent, he said: “Sitting in the car just now, driving across the border to get to London with three lions on my shirt.

“I can’t help where I’m born or how I’ve been raised. But I can quite happily support England. I am England through and through.

“That’s a fact. And I love England.”

Bob got back in touch with Scotland legends Brazil and Ally McCoist on Friday morning – and left them in stitches with his unwavering support for England.

“We’ll get the England flags up, the scarves, the new England strip and a six-foot cut-out of Harry Kane for the living room,” he told them.

Brazil simply responded: “This has to be a wind-up.”

Feelings aside, some Scots do give England a genuine chance of winning Euro 2024.

One told us: “I think they’ve got a great chance of winning it this year. If there’s ever a chance to win a tournament, this is the one.”

Another added: “I can see them getting to the final, but I don’t think they’ll win it.”

A third said: “They’ve got a really good squad. [Jude] Bellingham is amazing. But I really don’t see them doing well under [Gareth] Southgate.”

Scotland supporters are realistic about their own chances, too, even after several German pilsners.

Besides one fan who jokingly (we hope) predicted a 5-0 victory over Germany for the opener, everyone was hoping for a draw at best.

“You’ve got to be realistic,” one said. “I think we’re hoping for a 0-0 draw. It’s either that or we’ll get beat 2-0.”

Another added: “I think we’ll get a draw. 0-0 or 1-1. And that could set us up for the next few games to get through the group.”

When asked to predict the score for their opener against Germany, one fan said 4-0 to the hosts – and he was not joking.

But travelling to Munich with low expectations means there is nothing for Scotland to lose.

While even the most optimistic Scot would not tip them to go further than England, they will rival anyone for a good time.

The longer they are in Germany, the better!
