Scotland Euro 2024 hero left unemployed as he starts search for new club

ANOTHER one of Steve Clarke’s Scotland heroes could travel to Germany next week WITHOUT a club – joining Ryan Jack in a search for a new team this summer.

Stuart Armstrong, 32, is the latest player who will start a new chapter of his career after the Euros after Southampton confirmed that he’s played his last game at St Mary’s.

The former Celtic star, who joined the Saints from the Hoops in 2018, has been weighing up his options in recent months as he entered the final few months of his deal with the newly-promoted Premier League outfit.

The midfielder has been tipped to be the next Scot to head to Italy after being recently linked with Serie A side Fiorentina.

And the door has now been opened for him to complete his next move after his exit was confirmed by Southampton tonight.

Scotland and club team-mate Che Adams could also join him out the door as he is also out of contract this summer, but the club have revealed that talks are ongoing over a new deal for the striker.

A statement from Southampton read: “Having helped Saints return to the Premier League, Stuart Armstrong will depart the club upon the expiry of his contract at the end of June.

“The 32-year-old arrived on the south coast in 2018, making 214 appearances in six seasons at St Mary’s.

“Scoring 25 goals in that time, the Scotland international featured 45 times in 2023/24 as promotion was secured via the play-offs.

“The club would like to thank Stuart for his commitment and effort during his time as a Saint, and we wish him the very best in whatever comes next.

“Long-serving goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and striker Che Adams are also approaching the end of their contracts, with talks ongoing regarding potential new deals.”

Meanwhile, Scotland boss Clarke has been dealt another huge sucker blow ahead of the tournament, with Ben Doak also ruled out through injury.

He missed Monday’s 2-0 win over Gibraltar after picking up a knock in training but it was hoped that he would return in time for the big kick off against Germany on June 14.

However, the national team have announced that the Liverpool wonderkid won’t be fit to feature at the Euros and has been officially withdrawn from duty.

In other news, Bristol City forward Tommy Conway has been called up to replace Lyndon Dykes after the QPR man was also crocked in training at Lesser Hampden.
