In another thrilling encounter of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024, Scotland outclassed Namibia to secure their first-ever win over the African nation, and kick-start their campaign after their first game against England was called off due to rain.

Chasing a target of 156, Scotland’s openers were cautious against the new ball, ensuring minimal damage. Michael Jones and Brandon McMullen then started to accelerate despite losing George Munsey early. However, Namibia’s captain Gerhard Erasmus struck back, dismissing both threatening batters.

Scotland’s skipper Richie Berrington and Michael Leask then formed a match-changing partnership. Leask took on the role of the aggressor, while Berrington provided solid support. They carried Scotland close to victory before Leask was dismissed, but Berrington remained to see his side over the line. The decisive moment came in the 17th over when 19 runs were scored off David Wiese’s bowling, and Scotland chased down the target with nine balls and five wickets to spare. Namibia’s sloppy bowling towards the end cost them the game.

Namibia’s innings did not begin well, as they lost three wickets in the Powerplay due to poor shot selection and excellent catching from Scotland. Despite this, their intent remained strong.

Erasmus continued to play his shots and found a reliable partner in Zane Green, who played a contrasting knock to stabilise the innings. The duo added 51 runs in 38 balls together, with Erasmus showcasing clean ball-striking on his way to a half-century before being stumped off Leask’s bowling.

Although Erasmus set the stage for a strong finish, Namibia couldn’t capitalise. Scotland’s bowlers were disciplined, and just when Wiese and Green seemed to be accelerating, Brad Wheal dismissed both in a single over.

Despite several promising starts and Erasmus’s half-century, Namibia kept losing wickets and couldn’t muster a powerful finish. Scotland’s disciplined bowling and excellent fielding were crucial in securing their victory.
