Scotland could qualify for last 16 with two points with backdoor route in play

SINCE the tournament went to 24 teams no team has EVER qualified for the last 16 of a European Championships with just two points.

But that outlandish possibility remains in play for Scotland ahead of their final Group A clash with Hungary.

As they’re the first group to play itself out to a conclusion, the Scots still need a win against Hungary to be confident of making it through for the first time in their history.

There’s no chance that Steve Clarke and his men could count their chickens and play for a draw.

But amazingly – should Scotland get a point tomorrow night – they only need another four matches to go their way in other groups to become the first team ever to make it through with just two points.

That’s because, assuming they get that point and finish third in Group A, Scotland only need to finish above TWO other third placed teams to book a last 16 spot.

And today’s results mean that the Czech Republic and Georgia are both sitting with just ONE point from their two games to date.

Should they both also LOSE their last group fixtures against Turkey and Portugal respectively, then Scotland will be sure to finish ahead of them.

Then there’s Group B, where Albania and Croatia are also locked at the bottom of the group with one point from their two matches to date.

Should they both lose their final group matches, to Spain and Italy respectively.

If that comes to pass both would also be sure to finish the group with one point apiece – meaning Scotland would be ahead of them too.

It would be a truly remarkable turn of events when you consider that each of the last two tournaments, at least two teams have missed out on a last 16 spot with three points.
