Retired tennis great Andy Murray reveals plans to renovate his five-star hotel in Scotland after calling time on his sporting career

Sir Andy Murray has revealed his latest plans to renovate his five-star hotel in Scotland after retiring from tennis.

The double Wimbledon champion, 37, called time on his sporting career after an emotional send off at the Olympics in Paris last Thursday.

Prior to the Games starting, Murray announced that he would retire from the sport upon the completion of the event at Paris 2024.

And the tennis legend cut an emotional figure as he waved to fans after he and his Team GB partner Dan Evans were beaten in straight sets by USA duo Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul in the doubles quarter-final.

But the father-of-four shows no sign of putting his feet up as he continues to seek out improvements and changes at his Cromlix House venue, which is set in acres of secluded Stirlingshire countryside near Dunblane, where he grew up in Scotland.

Double Olympic gold medallist Murray and his wife Kim have lodged plans with Stirling Council for further improvements to be carried out at the hotel.

Plans show they have asked to make interior alterations to the rear of the category C-listed venue.

The proposed work includes filling stair voids, creating access for maintenance and reinstating an entrance door and is expected to cost £12,750.

In addition, they have asked for permission to make repairs and alterations to an outhouse on the site. They also want to install roof lights on the building. A decision will be made on the new plans in due course.

Murray bought the 15-room venue near his home town for almost £2million in 2013 and it has become the venue for several family celebrations.

The tennis star held his wedding reception at the hotel in 2015 and his elder brother Jamie was also married there.

Cromlix reopened in March last year following a three-month refurbishment programme overseen by Kim.

The couple had earlier been granted permission to build nine luxury woodland cabins in the hotel grounds as well as a ‘wellness cottage’ which will offer spa treatments.

Kim has previously told how she wants the hotel to have a homely feel.

She said: ‘I’ve always been really adamant I want this to feel more like a home than a hotel.

‘It’s five-star, we want it to be indulgent and aspirational and luxurious.

‘That’s really important but it needs to be welcoming and inviting and accessible.’

Almost as soon as the tears had dried after his final, speculation began as to what Sir Andy is going to do in his retirement.

Kim gave somewhat of a hint, telling reporters: ‘Obviously it will be lovely to have him at home – God knows I need the help with the children.’

During his illustrious tennis career Sir Andy would spend weeks competing away from home apart from Kim and their children Sophia, eight, Edie, five, Teddy, four and three year-old Lola.

But now, following his final match Kim is looking forward to sharing more of the childcare with him now that he will have more time on his hands.

The family weren’t able to be in Paris to watch the final game what with Kim carrying out the lionshare of parenting duties while her husband worked away.

With an extra pair of hands at home now, Kim plans to do more work to the Cromlix, which is her project which Sir Andy has limited involvement in.

She said: ‘He was never going to be picking over fabric samples.

‘But for me, it was a really lovely way to find myself again after four years of non-stop birthing children.

‘I’d been a mum and a homemaker for so many very intense years. It feels healthy to get a bit of balance back.’

However, Kim said Sir Andy might now get involved in the new wellness lodges and even more recent proposals she has planned.

With an eye for detail and style, she recently collaborated with the gardener Sarah Raven on a tulip collection, and it turns out Andy is quite a fan of tulips.

She said: ‘He never notices anything I do in the garden but this year he kept stopping by the tulips to admire them.

‘He seems to think they appeared by magic. I didn’t dare tell him how much I had spent on the bulbs.’
