Rangers hero Ally McCoist calls out ex-Scottish ref but he refuses to take blame

ALLY McCOIST is regarded as one of the most famous pundits in British football having been the voice of the Premier League, the Euros and on duty for the Champions League final in May.

The Rangers legend is used to being in the limelight and has been for many years through his time as a player and then media personality when he hung up his boots.

McCoist, who grew up in East Kilbride, is without a doubt one of the most famous people to come from the town, and is the biggest name to study at his old secondary school, Hunter High School

But the 61-year-old isn’t the only reputable name from Scottish football who went to school there.

Former SFA referee Bobby Madden is also a former pupil and he continued representing the school on the pitch long after McCoist retired.

Now retired following a short stint down south, Madden was one of Scottish football’s top whistlers over the past decade before he made the shock decision to quit in favour of English football in 2022.

During his time in Scotland, he was the man in the middle for eight Rangers vs Celtic matches and regularly represented the nation on the European stage in Champions League and Europa League fixtures.

He gave McCoist a run for his money in his own field, but the 45-year-old would admit that the Rangers icon still comes out on top in terms of celebrity status.

And during the referee’s trip to Germany for Euro 2024, he bumped into McCoist and posed for a picture with him after they met at a restaurant.

Madden posted the picture on Instagram as he listed the Ibrox legend’s honours in his caption before adding his own accolade at the end.

He joked: “Two of Hunter High Schools finest. 290 career goals, ten league titles, a Scottish cup, nine league cups and Lanarkshire schools cross country silver medal between us.”

While it was a clear compliment to the other famous former pupil, McCoist was quick to point out a mistake in the statistics that Madden listed.

The referee did get the number of trophies the football legend won during his time at Ibrox correct, but he done him out of over 100 career goals.

McCoist scored 355 goals for the Light Blues alone, never mind his time at St Johnstone, Sunderland, Kilmarnock and at international level.

McCoist hit back: “Ye couldn’t have had the same maths teacher as me at Hunter Yev. Done me for at least a century of goals!!!!”

But Madden refused to take the blame for his error as he admitted he got the wrong tally from checking Wikipedia.

He joked: “I deducted the ones that were offside!! Blame Wikipedia!
