Police consider Israeli surveillance technology for Scotland

Police Scotland is considering introducing a Israeli surveillance technology to enable its officers to speed up the detection of crime and searches for vulnerable people.

The national force is evaluating a public consultation on introducing BriefCam, a system which uses “enhanced search software” to review large amounts of information more rapidly, accurately and efficiently.

Some councils already use the company’s software for traffic management. Police Scotland has said that the technology could be used to help locate missing people and trace suspects, significantly reducing the time the police spend making inquiries.

Although BriefCam is capable of facial recognition — which is already legally in use by UK police forces — Police Scotland has headed off civil liberties privacy concerns by insisting it would not use
