Major fashion retailer suddenly closes flagship Scottish store

A MAJOR fashion retailer has suddenly closed down its only store in Scotland.

The Massimo Dutti branch in Glasgow appears to have shut its doors for a final time.

The company is a Spanish premium clothing retailer which specialises in cashmere and wool products.

It was started up in 1985 and is owned by Spanish multinational company Inditex – the parent company of Zara, Pull & Bear, and other brands.

But it appears that signs have been taken down for at the retail unit located on 71-77 on the city’s busy Buchanan Street, the Glasgow Times reports.

The shop now lies empty on the famous Style Mile.

The Glasgow branch also shows up as “permanently closed” on Google, and does not appear on the company’s store locator on their website.

It was the only store based in Scotland, but there are several stores still open in and around London.

It comes as the boss behind the Inditex fashion brand, which owns popular brands such as Pull & Bear, Bershka and Massimo Dutti, is in talks to buy a flagship Scots property.

Amancio Ortega, whose net worth exceeds $100 billion, is hoping to buy the iconic nine-storey Mint building in Edinburgh’s city centre.

Close to St James Quarter, the office block is currently let out to four tenants – Nationwide Building Society, Franco Manca, FNZ and Tattu.

But for an estimated £45 million, the unit could be acquired by Ortega’s property investment firm Pontegadea.
