Journey through Scotland part of the world’s most expensive £100K train trip

A JOURNEY through some of Scotland’s most dramatic scenery is part of the priciest rail trip on the planet.

With prices starting at £96,925 per person, the ultimate luxury rail trip takes in Edinburgh and the Highlands as part of a Phileas Fogg-inspired journey.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the eyewatering cost, there’s just one tour a year and the next is on September 3.

The Around the World by Luxury Train trip takes in more than 20 cities in 59 days.

And the price tag does not include most of the necessary flights to link up the various track destinations.

But tour operator Railbookers says the trip packs in some rail gems, including Canada’s Rocky Mountaineer, India’s Maharajas’ Express and Scotland‘s Belmond Royal Scotsman.

“Journey through the Canadian Rockies on the Rocky Mountaineer, then explore Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands on the Royal Scotsman,” say Railbookers.

“Traverse Italy’s romantic cities on the La Dolce Vita Orient Express, continue on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express to Paris and Istanbul and then experience India on the Maharajas’ Express, including the Taj Mahal.

“In South Africa, take a Rovos Rail journey to Victoria Falls, and conclude in Southeast Asia on the Eastern & Oriental Express through Malaysia and Singapore, blending luxury and adventure.”

On day nine, travellers arrive in Edinburgh for an overnight stay at a five-star hotel.

Then they board the luxurious Belmond Royal Scotsman the next day for a three-night journey.

The travel company adds: “Travel west through Falkirk to Craigendoran, the start of the West Highland Line. Enjoy afternoon tea as you approach Loch Lomond.

“After climbing Glen Falloch, arrive at Spean Bridge for an onboard dinner and entertainment in the Observation Car.

“The journey continues west through Fort William, offering views of Ben Nevis. Disembark at Arisaig for a stroll along Morar Sands, taking in the Cuillin Mountains.

“Enjoy lunch onboard as you return to Fort William. Visit Glenfinnan Monument with a Highlander and have tea at Inverlochy Castle.

“You can opt for a walk to Steall Waterfall in Glen Nevis. End the day with dinner as you travel south to Bridge of Orchy.”

The next day’s highlight is a visit to the Isle of Bute and Mount Stuart.

Passengers return to the train for a formal dinner and travel to Kilmarnock for the night.

Day thirteen will see them back in Edinburgh and enjoy a private walking tour of the city, including a visit to the historic Edinburgh Castle and the Museum of Scotland.
