Hungary’s Barnabas Varga has been released from hospital following his accidental collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn that left the striker unconscious and with multiple cheekbone fractures.
The Hungarian FA (MLSZ) has confirmed that Varga is now recovering at home in Hungary after being discharged.
The incident occurred during Hungary’s final group game at the European Championship in Germany. Varga collided with Gunn in the 70th minute of Sunday’s game when both players were challenging for a high ball. That led to a lengthy delay while Varga received treatment and was then taken off on a stretcher.
The MLSZ confirmed on Monday that Varga had undergone successful surgery at Klinikum Stuttgart. A day later, the association posted a photo of Varga receiving a visit from Hungary head coach Marco Rossi in hospital.

Rossi confirmed previously confirmed that Varga will not play any further part if Hungary continue their Euro 2024 journey. They could still qualify for the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams depending on results in Groups E and F later on Wednesday.

UEFA previously insisted there was “no delay” in treating Varga on the pitch at the MHPArena in Stuttgart. Hungary players had been seen running to the oncoming stretcher to speed up its arrival shortly following the incident.
Varga had started all three of his country’s Euro group games, scoring in the 3-1 defeat by Switzerland on June 15.
“It’s no secret the family went through difficult moments in front of the television screen, but now we can be calmer,” Varga’s father, Andras, told the Hungarian media outlet Nemzeti Sport on Monday afternoon.
