‘Horrible’ Ryan Porteous challenge made me feel sick, says BBC pundit

SCOTLAND hero Willie Miller confessed that Ryan Porteous’ horror tackle left him ‘feeling a bit sick’.

The former Aberdeen legend looked on aghast with the rest of the Scotland supporters in horror as Porteous caught Ilkay Gundogan flush the ankle with the studs of his left foot as he attempted to clear the ball with his right.

The German star‘s leg appeared to buckle slightly and Miller said: “You’re not going to win the ball with a tackle, you’ve got to try and block it.

“He should be trying to make himself big and be a block rather than a tackle.

“What he’s actually done is combine the scissor challenge with an over the top into the ankle, it’s horrendous and makes you feel a bit sick.

“Gundogan is lucky because his studs are in the ground and he’s fortunate they bounce up when the tackle goes in, otherwise it’s a snap. It’s horrible. It’s a horrible challenge.”

Steve Clarke‘s men were already two goals down at that point – but there was no way back from this.

While the referee didn’t give it in real time, once he was asked to reconsider on VAR, there was little argument.

He pointed to the spot and Kai Havertz finished from 12 yards to make the half time deficit 3-0.

Ironically, this was precisely the kind of tackle which it was thought Porteous had largely got out of his game.

It was the former Hibs man’s first sending off since his Easter Road days – when he regularly found himself the centre of controversy with opposing managers such as Steven Gerrard and Jim Goodwin.

His last red card came in a 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen back in March 2023.

There was very little in the way of support for the defender, who has generally been an excellent addition to Clarke’s side.

One fan wrote: “Abysmal challenge by Porteous! Gundogan lucky he didn’t snap his leg.”

A second said: “Howler from Porteous. Second half is going to be painful.”

A third wrote: “Ryan Porteous with one of the worst challenges I’ve seen in god knows how long.”
