Historic Move? ECB and Cricket Scotland Consider Fielding Great Britain Team at LA 2028
A Great Britain cricket squad is being discussed for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Scotland. After an incredible 128 years, cricket will notably make a comeback to the Olympics. Great Britain won the gold medal in this event at the last Olympics, which took place in 1900, when they defeated France by 158 runs.
Team GB, the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team, is made up of athletes from the United Kingdom who compete in the Olympics. The British Olympic Association is responsible for organizing this team. English and Scottish players may therefore be included on the cricket team. Conversations with Cricket Ireland have commenced, and the ECB is excited about the prospect of expanding the game.
“With the Los Angeles Olympics four years away, it’s very early stages, but we’re talking to Team GB and Cricket Scotland about the next steps we need to take. We look forward to working together to compete when cricket returns to the Olympic stage in 2028. Along with England and Wales hosting Women’s and Men’s [T20] World Cups in 2026 and 2030, it’s another great opportunity to grow the game and inspire more people to develop a love for cricket,” an ECB spokesperson was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
According to Andy Anson, the chief executive of the British Olympic Association, the nations can unite and designate a single nation as the primary regulatory body for cricket during the Games. In order to ensure that everything goes as planned, Anson added, the ECB and Cricket Scotland will need to collaborate.
“The ECB will be at the centre of that. They’ll have to work with Cricket Scotland to make sure that happens properly. We will help them sign agreements to come together and create a single national governing body, as we have done in those other sports. We are working very closely with the ECB to make them become the fully fledged National Olympic Committee member,” he added.
The ICC (International Cricket Council) has proposed a 20-over competition with six teams, although the specifics of the cricket competition at the Olympics are still to be announced. The event’s qualifying requirements have not yet been released.
