Harry Souttar spotted wearing rare Scottish club kit on international duty

HARRY SOUTTAR may have switched allegiances to play for Australia rather than Scotland, the country of his birth.

But he hasn’t lost a sense of where he came from and the small Scottish football club that provided the springboard to a pro career.

Souttar, 25, is currently on loan at Sheffield United from Leicester City and has been called up to the Australia national team squad for their games against Bahrain and Indonesia this month.

Leicester City signed him for £15m last year after a series of impressive displays for Stoke, who had brought him to England in 2017 from Dundee United.

Before he joined the Tannadice club however, Souttar played for Brechin City Youths as a boy.

He did so alongside his older brother, current Rangers and Scotland defender John.

Ryan Gauld would also join the brothers at Dundee United and now he looks set to finally make his Scotland debut this week in the Nations League against either Poland or Portugal.

Gauld, 28, recently spoke about a picture of he and the elder Souttar brother from their Brechin days – at which time John was a flying winger, not a centre-back!

He remembers them well and it would seem younger brother Harry has fond memories of his boyhood club too.

The towering defender rocked up to the Australia squad camp with a retro Brechin jersey dating back to the late nineties.

A tweet from Football Shirt Finds Australia showed the player sporting the rare footie shirt with his suitcases in tow.

Manufactured by Spall (who in their own glory days produced kits for Blackburn Rovers, Wimbledon and Wolves), the top has a blue and white patterned collar, blue and white stripes on the shoulders and is dominated by a bright red pattern and a centralised Brechin City badge.

Unfortunately it didn’t prove to be a lucky charm for Souttar, who scored an 89th-minute own goal in Australia’s opening World Cup qualifying Group C match against Bahrain.

But footie fans were loving his choice of attire.

One said said: “He’s from Brechin as well so defo a connection. It’s a lovely kit.”

A second punter said: “Quite remarkable.”

“Amazing,” said a third fan.

And another said: “Love this!”

Brechin were a staple in the lower leagues of Scottish professional football until recently.

The Glebe Park side suffered three relegations in four seasons: from the Championship in 2018, League One in 2019 and League Two in 2021.

The Angus club now plays in the Highland League and came agonisingly close to a shot at returning to the SPFL – but were pipped by just TWO GOALS to the title by Buckie Thistle after finishing level on points.
