NEW DELHI: Julian Nagelsmann, the Germany coach, acknowledged Scotland‘s potential threat in the upcoming Euro 2024 opener in Munich on Friday.
Despite the absence of global superstars, he emphasized their agility, dedication, and quintessential Scottish spirit, which makes them a formidable opponent.
According to Reuters, Nagelsmann recognized the pressure and tension surrounding the tournament’s opening match but stressed its necessity. He expressed confidence in his players, highlighting their self-belief and eagerness to succeed, especially with the advantage of playing on home turf.
“When I look in my players’ eyes … I see a lot of belief and a lot of confidence, which is what I want … we have the home advantage, we want to win.”
Germany’s tournament reputation has been somewhat tarnished by a series of disappointing performances since their 2014 World Cup triumph in Brazil. They
suffered early exits in the subsequent two World Cups and were eliminated in the round of 16 at the last European Championship.
Nagelsmann, who assumed the role of Germany manager in October 2023, acknowledged that Scotland would seek to exploit the pressure on the hosts.
He emphasized the need for the German defense to remain focused and prevent crosses, as Scotland possesses the ability to create chances and maintain possession.
On a personal note, Nagelsmann expressed his emotions leading up to the match, reflecting on his journey from a small village with more cows than people to now preparing for the opening game of Euro 2024 in Munich.
Ilkay Gundogan, the Germany captain, praised Nagelsmann’s approach, stating that the coach instills confidence, provides clear direction, and discusses roles with the players. This clarity and sense of calm have helped the team, especially in light of their recent tournament setbacks.
“No other game is like the first one, because then you can use that momentum and that euphoria for the next few games, and that is why the most important objective tomorrow is to win the game,” Gundogan emphasized.
