Australia beat Scotland by five wickets in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 match played on Sunday (June 16). In the Group B fixture, which took place at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia, the Aussies chased down the target of 181 runs in 19.4 overs for the loss of five wickets. Opener Travis Head and all-rounder Marcus Stoinis scored half-centuries to help Australia maintain a 100% win record in the ongoing tournament.

Australia’s win over Scotland came as good news for the England team as well, because due to that, the Jos Buttler-led side also managed to qualify for the Super 8s. England finished the group stage with five points from four matches, which helped them take the No. 2 position in the points table. Scotland also finished the campaign with 5 points, but their net run rate was less than England.

England would have crashed out of the tournament had Scotland won the match or if the game had been washed out due to rain, but nothing such happened.

In the Super 8s, England will be part of Group 2 and face the West Indies (June 19), South Africa (June 21), and the United States of America (June 23). If the defending champions manage to finish in the top two, then they will qualify for the semi-finals.

England, which won the T20 World Cup title in 2022, is looking to become the first team in the tournament’s history to win back-to-back titles.

Australia to face India

In the Super 8s, Australia will be part of Group 1, which features India and Afghanistan. The fourth team will be decided after the Nepal-Bangladesh and Netherlands-Sri Lanka matches on Monday (June 17). If Bangladesh beat Nepal, then they will qualify, and if they lose and the Netherlands beat Sri Lanka, then Scott Edwards’ men will progress to the next round.

In the Super 8s, the Australians will open their campaign against Bangladesh or the Netherlands on June 20 and then take on Afghanistan on June 22 and India on June 24.
