Euro 2024 LIVE: England reaction, Scotland to name squad, Ronaldo latest

Mic drop

Gareth Southgate has admitted England are keeping tabs on Crystal Palace sensation Michael Olise.

The Eagles talisman’s international future remains a mystery after he was left out of the France squad for Euro 2024.

The 22-year-old is eligible to ply his trade for four nations having been born in London to a Nigerian father and a French-Algerian mother.

Olise – who scored 10 Premier League goals and registered six assists in just 14 starts this season – looked to have chosen France after Les Blues capped him at Under-18 and U-21 level.

But having been overlooked by national team boss Didier Deschamps, Three Lions chief Southgate has revealed England should be interested.

“He would have to have a transfer of association,” Southgate said.

“That process would take quite a while.

“He is obviously a very good player, he hasn’t made their squad. They might be taking him to the Olympics, I don’t know.

“He is a player we should have an interest in because he is a very good player but there is no way you could do all of that in time for the Euros.”

Cris and tell

Cristiano Ronaldo will play in his 11th major international tournament this summer having been named in Portugal’s squad for Euro 2024.

The 39-year-old – who is the most capped player in international football history – made his tournament debut at Euro 2004.

The Al-Nassr striker has made 206 appearances for Portugal and scored 128 goals.

Portugal boss Roberto Martinez said Ronaldo continued to offer “a quality in front of goal which we greatly appreciate and which we need”.

Ronaldo later shared a photo of himself in the new Portugal kit on Instagram and wrote: “Proud to be back representing Portugal at Euro. Let’s go with it!”

Set the Tone

Toni Kroos has announced that he will retire from football after Euro 2024 with Germany in his homeland.

In a statement on Instagram, the 34-year-old said: “The day of my presentation at Real Madrid, the day that changed my life. My life as a footballer – but especially as a person.

“It was the start of a new chapter at the biggest club in the world. After 10 years, at the end of the season this chapter comes to an end. I will never forget that insolent successful time!

“I would particularly like to thank everyone that welcomed me with an open heart and trusted me. But especially I would like to thank you, dear Madridistas, for your affection and your love from the first day until the last one.

“At the same time this decision means that my career as an active footballer will end this summer after the Euro championship. As I have always said: Real Madrid is and will be my last club.

“I am happy and proud, that in my mind I found the right timing for my decision and that I could choose it by my own. My ambition was always to finish my career at the peak of my performance level. From now on there is only one leading thought: a por la 15!!! HALA MADRID Y NADA MAS!”
