Donald Trump would be the ‘greatest president’ for Scotland, son says
Donald Trump would be the “greatest president” for Scotland, his son Eric Trump has claimed.
He made the claims while on a trip to the Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire on Saturday.
Eric said he “absolutely loves Scotland” and that his father Donald, who is currently campaigning to become US President, would be the best “Scotland has ever had in the US” if he were be successful.
He said: “My father would be the greatest president as it pertains to the relationship with Scotland, that Scotland has ever had in the US.”
However, he was questioned by STV News’ political editor Colin Mackay on the 25% tax placed on goods coming into the US during Trump’s 2016 presidential reign, which is estimated to have cost the Scottish whisky industry £600m.
“Yeah, well a lot of the tariffs that were put on American goods coming into Europe were really horrible and my father really combated that all over the world,” he responded.
“My father wanted, he likes free trade but he wants fair trade and we weren’t having fair trade.”
When pressed again on the high tariff, Trump responded it “very well could have” impacted the whisky industry in Scotland, which when Colin Mackay reiterated it did, he replied “100%”.
He added: “You also have to accept he’s president for the United States of America and many of the things that European countries were doing had a very big impact on the industries of countries in America and again, he wants to be the greatest trading partner in the world but he wants fair trade.”
