Dingwall Academy pupil is called up to Scotland squad

Ross County Women and Girls’ star Keira Syrjanen has been called up to the Scotland under-17s squad for their fixtures at the start of next month.

The teenager was part of the Dingwall Academy side that made history before the summer, becoming the school’s first girls’ team to win the North of Scotland Cup.

She has also been a key player on the pitch for County as their under-18s reached the Scottish Cup semi finals, and seems to have transitioned to senior football well with County’s SWFL North side.

Syrjanen will link up with talent from clubs like Liverpool, Rangers and Celtic in the national squad, with matches on October 1 against Iceland, Ooctober 4 against Northern Ireland and October 7 against Poland, all at Broadwood Stadium.

Ahead of the public announcement of the squad, Syrjanen played an important role for County in their latest League Cup group stage win over Grampian.

Despite going behind early on, a quickfire double from Mollie Parker turned the game in the hosts’ favour in Alness.

Rhea Hossack would score a brace of her own, before Syrjanen found the net and Daisy Fraser scored direct from a free kick to send County into half time 6-2 up.

A quieter second half would still see Syrjanen find the net again though to put the cherry on top of a good performance, sealing a 7-2 victory.

The three points mean that County sit at the top of their group on goal difference with just a trip to Elgin left this Sunday.

A draw will be enough for County to seal top spot, and even a narrow defeat would be enough to see them progress into the knockout rounds, but head coach Iain MacIver will be looking for a strong display to continue the side’s momentum going into league action.
