David Moyes quizzed on Scotland manager position after Euro 2024 exit

DAVID MOYES is adamant Steve Clarke has been excellent as the Scotland manager.

But that didn’t stop him from shutting down the idea that he could succeed the former Kilmarnock boss as the man in charge of the national team.

The ex-West Ham United, Manchester United and Everton gaffer was asked for his thoughts on the position and whether he would consider taking it.

Under Clarke, Scotland have qualified for two of the last three major tournaments, making it to back-to-back Euros and only missing out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar via the play-offs.

In that time they have also won promotion to Nations League A and recorded memorable wins over Denmark, Israel, Norway and Spain.

But they flopped at Euro 2020 on home soil and failed to make any impact over in Germany for Euro 2024.

While the Tartan Army fans won plaudits for their exploits off the pitch, this Scotland team were rightly criticised for their lack of quality on it.

It’s led to calls from sections of the support for the 60-year-old to resign, with some fans questioning if this is as far as he can take this group.

The former West Bromwich Albion and Reading head coach, who cut his teeth at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho, has a contract with the SFA that runs until 2026.

That would see him lead the nation towards the next World Cup, due to be staged in Mexico & the USA in two years’ time.

But after three games with barely a shot on target and only two goals scored, debate on a Clarke successor has mounted.

One man who could fill the role is Moyes, 61, and he was asked about that possibility on talkSPORT today.

Moyes admitted he does look at the Hampden post in a positive light and praised the faithful fans for their backing.

He said: “It’s a really good job. Steve has been brilliant and that is why everybody is behind it.

“You look at the amount of Scotland fans who have travelled, you look at the national anthem. You look at the way supporters have behaved themselves. They have been a credit to the nation.

“Maybe the team has fallen a little bit below that, at times, but I think the supporters have been magnificent. They really have been.”

He insisted Clarke has done superb work in the role BUT the man himself might decide he wants a break after five years in the position.

Moyes continued: “I believe the Scotland job will be a good job for any manager.

“Some managers, who have worked quite hard over the years, sometimes need a break and take a wee bit of time before you do anything. Look, I have to say, and you know me, I will always stick up for managers the way I see it.

“None of you can say Steve has not done a terrific job. Steve Clarke has done a brilliant job.

“Last night, was probably a night where he would be disappointed.

“The Germany game, it will live with him forever, we were opening the tournament.

“Steve’s done a brilliant job.”
