Cuthbert: Scotland will need to be ruthless in playoffs to reach Euros
Scotland star Erin Cuthbert admits the national team will need to be “ruthless” and “clinical” in their bid to reach Euro 2025.
Pedro Martinez Losa’s side secured the top spot in their group and will be seeded in Friday’s playoff draw as a result after winning five games on the spin and ending the campaign unbeaten.
Of the 28 teams to reach the playoff stage, only seven will qualify for the tournament being held in Switzerland next summer.
And with that comes added pressure and a higher level of opponent and Chelsea winger Cuthbert says Scotland will need to be ready.
Speaking after Tuesday’s 1-0 over Serbia in Glasgow, the 25-year-old winger said: “I think from here on in it gets harder, the opposition gets harder, the pressure gets harder.
“I think now it’s time for us all to step up. It’s how we handle pressure because it’s going to be really important.
“There’s going to be moments where we need to sit in, defend for our lives, and there’s going to be moments where we have to be really, really clinical, because we may or may not get the chances that we get in this campaign, as many that we’ve had.
“So I think we’re going to have to be ruthless and we’re going to have to see a really ruthless Scotland, and front-footed as well, because I think we do best when we high-press teams and we win the ball high up the park.”
