Craig Gordon’s Scotland promise to Steve Clarke fulfilled
The Hearts goalkeeper was subbed on as Scotland played out a 2-2 draw with the Finns before heading to Germany this summer.
It looked to be the final goodbye for the 41-year-old as far as international football was concerned, as it was known at that point he would be cut from the squad for the Euros.
However, Clarke revealed it was merely an ‘I’ll see you later’.
Capped 75 times, the Jambos No.1 has the chance to add to that after he was selected alongside Angus Gunn and Jon McCracken as Scotland’s goalkeepers for the upcoming international window.
Scotland will play Croatia on Saturday, October 12 before facing Portugal in Glasgow three days later.
Explaining the decision to recall Gordon, Clarke said: “He’s the number one at Hearts, he’s playing every week. Zander’s on the bench, Liam Kelly is on the bench at Rangers, Robby McCrorie is on the bench at Kilmarnock.
“I need three goalkeepers so what better than to bring Craig back?
“Craig told me it was not a farewell and he’d see me in the future. He’s lived up to his promise.
“It’s absolutely a testament to him, he’s always shown that he’s up for the fight. He wants to play every week and as many times as he can for his country. I’m looking forward to seeing him again.”
