Christmas travel chaos for passengers as weather forces cancellation of services

That follows P&O’s decision to do the same, meaning no passenger ferries will be crossing the Irish Sea on what is normally one of the busiest days of the year just before Christmas.

Stena Line have confirmed that every sailing up until the 11.30pm has been cancelled, and their latest updates have that crossing in doubt too.

CalMac, which operates ferry services on Scotland’s west coast, said 25 of its 30 routes were either cancelled or affected by disruption on Sunday.

That could increase too as the weather continues to batter the country.

Rail operator ScotRail announced that speed restrictions would be in place for part of the route between Glasgow and Oban/Mallaig, and the Inverness service to Kyle/Wick.

Currently, it doesn’t appear as if flights from any of Scotland’s main airports are being affected but with high winds and heavy rain to continue through the day, passengers are being urged to double check before travelling.

The wind warning remains in place for all of Scotland throughout Sunday, but there are none in place for Monday and it is hoped that could ease travel disruption before Christmas.
