Business confidence falls during general election campaign

1. Business confidence in Scotland has plunged as general election campaigning stepped up, research has found.
The Business Barometer, produced by Bank of Scotland, said confidence declined 14 percentage points to 43 per cent in June. That was still slightly ahead of the UK average, which was down nine points to 41 per cent.

In Scotland, firms’ optimism about their own trading dropped by 16 points to 44 per cent, while confidence in the economy fell 11 points to 42 per cent.
Martyn Kendrick, regional director at Bank of Scotland, suggested the outlook would improve as the summer months should boost areas such as hospitality and tourism.
