Billy Gilmour becomes new target for Euro giants but Brighton ‘kick out £8m bid’

BILLY GILMOUR could be set for a stunning move to Serie A, according to reports.

The Scotland midfielder, 23, played 41 times for Brighton last season across all competitions as he became a key player under Roberto De Zerbi.

He has now left the south coast and German coach Fabian Hürzeler is the new gaffer at the Amex Stadium.

Gilmour joined the Seagulls in 2022 after coming through the academy at Chelsea and it’s one of his old managers at Stamford Bridge who is keen to reunite with him in Italy.

According to The Telegraph, Antonio Conte – who has just taken over at Napoli – is interested in the former Rangers kid.

They say their pursuit will step up next week but a conflicting report from talkSPORT cites the Premier League side having already fielded an £8m bid from the player – which has been rejected.

Brighton signed Gilmour for £9m two years ago and it’s said it would take an offer of around £12m for them to consider a sale.

Gilmour has two years remaining on his current contract at Brighton.

He never made a first team appearance under Conte but he was a star of the club’s youth teams and the Italian would later manage against the Scottish midfielder when he was boss at Spurs and Gilmour was on loan at Norwich City.

A move to Naples would see him line up against international teammate Lewis Ferguson, who starred for Bologna last season (but is currently recovering from an injury that ruled him out of Euro 2024).

A number Scots have been plying their trade in Serie A recently.

Josh Doig moved from Hibs to Hellas Verona in 2022 and he is now in Serie B with Sassuolo.
