Australia secures series whitewash over Scotland after Cameron Green’s all-round masterclass

Australia has secured a 3-0 series whitewash over Scotland following Cameron Green’s all-round heroics during the third T20I at The Grange on Saturday.

The West Australian claimed three wickets before scoring an unbeaten half-century during the run chase, helping Australia reel in the 150-run target with 23 balls to spare.

Green, batting at No. 4, cleared the boundary rope five times on his way towards 62* (39), the highest score of his T20I career to date, while his bowling figures of 3-35 from four overs were also a career-best.

‘There’s a few big boys that aren’t around,” laughed Green, later named player of the match.

“Obviously this is (Glenn Maxwell’s) spot, but happy to fill in and get some experience there.”

Scotland’s Brandon McMullen cracked a half-century, his second of the series, as the hosts posted 9-149, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Australia from cruising towards a six-wicket victory.

“It’s been a tough week results-wise for us, but having the opportunity to play against a team like Australia, to get them across to Scotland for a series, has been a fantastic experience for all of us,” Scotland captain Richie Berrington said.

“To have that exposure, it’s something we need more of to keep improving as a team.”

McMullen anchored Scotland’s innings after Australian captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and chose to bowl first, forming a 34-run partnership with opener George Munsey for the second wicket.

A stunning one-handed catch from Travis Head at short fine leg ended McMullen’s knock on 56 (39), with his departure prompting a late collapse of 4-8 from 17 deliveries.

Green was the pick of the Australian bowlers having accounted for Munsey, Berrington and all-rounder Mark Watt, while seamers Sean Abbott and Aaron Hardie each snared two wickets.

Scotland seamer Brad Currie removed both Australian openers during the Powerplay, including another duck for batting prodigy Jake Fraser-McGurk, before a 61-run partnership between Marsh and Green for the third wicket.

Green reached his second T20I half-century in 33 deliveries before a trademark blitz from pinch-hitter Tim David (25 off 14 balls) put the result beyond doubt.

Earlier, rising star Cooper Connolly was presented his maiden T20I cap, becoming the 110th men’s player to represent Australia in the format.

The 21-year-old wasn’t required with the bat, taking 0-25 from three overs.

“It looked like he loved it,” Green said of Connolly.

“He loves the big moments, and he’s such a chilled bloke before a debut. I was dry-retching before my first game.

“He looks so comfortable, he knows his game so well. We know what he can do with the bat, but equally it’s a great opportunity to see what he can do with the ball, and I thought he bowled beautifully.”

Australia’s United Kingdom tour will resume next week with a three-match T20 series against England, which gets underway in Southampton on Thursday at 3.30am AEST.
