Angus Gunn opens up on the ‘biggest moment’ of his career
ANGUS GUNN knows Scotland’s Euro 2024 opener will be one of the biggest moments in his career.
The Tartan Army will descend on Germany in their tens of thousands next week, dreaming of glory in the opener at the Allianz Arena.
Having featured in wins against Spain and Norway in qualifying, Gunn feels Steve Clarke’s men can repeat the feat when they kick off the tournament against the much-fancied hosts.
He said: “There’s massive excitement. There has been ever since it was confirmed we’d qualified.
“Going through the last few months when the draw was made raised the expectations more and more.
“Not many people expected us to go through the group, but we did so comfortably.
“That was a good thing being the underdog. We’re probably going to be the underdog again now.
“But with the results we got in the group against Spain and Norway, I think people are going to expect more from us.
“Germany, as the pot one team, are always going to expect to get out of the group.
“Playing them first, it will be a great occasion and a good game for us to see where we’re at.
“It’ll be the biggest game a lot of the lads have played in.
“From my point of view, it will just be about concentrating on getting there in the best form I can.
“Once I’m there, I’m sure I’ll enjoy it.
“We’re all looking forward to it. There will be thousands of Scots going over to Germany and hopefully we can give them a good time.”
Gunn is set to win his tenth cap in tonight’s Hampden friendly against Finland.
The Norwich stopper admits he was out of his comfort zone when he first linked up with Clarke’s squad in March last year.
But having familiar faces from club level helped him quickly settle in, with his first two games — pivotal wins and clean sheets against Cyprus and Spain — the perfect introduction to the Tartan Army.
Gunn, 28, told the BBC Scottish Football Podcast: “There were a lot of nerves the first time I joined up with the team. I didn’t know what to expect.
“It probably helped that I had familiar faces around me, like Kenny McLean and Grant Hanley. I also knew Stuart Armstrong and Che Adams from Southampton. That definitely helped.

“To be fair, all the lads welcomed me straight away and I felt very comfortable from the first second.
“It’s a credit to them and it couldn’t have started any better with those first two games.”
