Aberdour shinty kids are South Scotland World Cup winners!
The club were represented at the Macauley Association South World Cup competition, which was held at Mossfield in Oban, on Sunday by two teams – one of whom picked up the trophy.
A total of 150 youngsters, from 18 teams, competed in P5 and under, and P6/7, age groups, with both squads from Aberdour taking part in the former.
The ‘blacks’ and ‘whites’ competed well in a large group section, in which they faced each other, with the ‘blacks’ coming out on top.
The ‘whites’ picked up wins against Kilmory, Taynuilt and Gaels, whilst also losing out to Rockfield and Park, and their fine performances were rewarded with a fourth-place finish.
Aberdour’s other youngsters, meanwhile, defeated each of their opponents in the group phase, and their club mates ran them closest out of those matches.
In a straight final, they met second-placed Rockfield, who the Aberdour ‘blacks’ had defeated 4-1 earlier in the tournament, in a close match.
The West Fifers took the lead and, although their opponents equalised, grabbed a winning goal for a 2-1 success to earn the title of P5 and under South World Cup winners.
In their seven games played, the winning Aberdour team scored 33 goals, conceding only two, on their way to a memorable achievement.
